Arson and assault charges
A Guelph man faces arson and assault charges following two separate incidents at a group home Saturday.
Just after 7:30 a.m. emergency services were called to an address near Edinburgh Road South and Municipal Street. Several residents had been involved in a verbal dispute when one used a butane canister to set a bathroom counter on fire. The fire was contained to the bathroom and no injuries were reported.
Later that afternoon two residents were arguing in the kitchen and one threw a pot, which narrowly missed the other resident but caused a large dent in a fridge.
A 19-year-old Guelph man is charged with arson and assault with a weapon. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.
Man tried to get child in car
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a man tried to get a child into his vehicle Saturday night.
Approximately 9 p.m. a mother and her 13-year-old daughter had just left a business near Paisley Road and Imperial Road South. The daughter was approached by a man who told her to get into the vehicle to play a game called happy car. The mother yelled at the man and he drove away.
He was described as a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, with wavy light sandy brown hair and a goatee. He was driving a white SUV.

3 officers assaulted, woman arrested
A Guelph woman faces charges after three Guelph Police officers were assaulted Sunday morning.
Shortly after 10 a.m. police were attempting to arrest a man downtown on an unrelated matter. A woman began screaming in the face of an officer involved in the arrest and pulled her foot back as if she was going to kick the officer.
A second officer arrived on scene and tried to detain the woman, who kicked him in the shin. She was arrested and transported to the police station, where she kicked another officer while being searched.
A 53-year-old Guelph woman is charged with two counts of assault to prevent an arrest and one count of assaulting a police officer. She was held for a bail hearing Monday.
Two Tundras stolen, four more attempts
Toyota Tundras remain at the top of thieves hit list in Guelph, with two more stolen over the weekend and attempts made on four others.
Just after 7 a.m. Friday, a resident of Clairfields Drive West reported they had come outside in the morning to find a window broken on their 2022 Tundra and the steering wheel cut to remove an anti-theft device. The truck is equipped with an immobilizer device, preventing it from being stolen.
Just after 2 a.m. Saturday a resident near Grange Road and Cityview Drive North reported someone had just attempted to steal his 2023 Tundra, smashing a window and breaking part of the steering column. The truck was equipped with a brake pedal locking device.
Surveillance video revealed two males one dressed in all black and the other in all red arriving in a small silver car and approaching the truck. A small white SUV with a moon roof also drove past twice however it is not known if the occupants were involved.
A short time later, a resident near Willow Road and Marksam Road reported his black 2024 Tundra had just been stolen from his driveway. He reported seeing a white Acura SUV and silver Hyundai sedan stopping in front of his house and a short time later saw his truck being driven away.
Just before 3 a.m. Saturday a resident near Kortright Road West and Ironwood Road was awakened by a grinding sound. He looked outside and saw two vehicles described as a white SUV and a red SUV fleeing from the area. A window had been smashed on his Tundra and the steering wheel had been cut to remove an anti-theft device.
Approximately two hours later, police were called by a resident near Pine Ridge Drive and Farley Drive, who was awakened by a motion sensor alarm. He looked outside and saw a man walking away from the his Tundra. The man got into the passenger side of another Tundra which had been parked along the street.
That Tundra drove and parked in front of the complainants house. He activated his alarm and the two males ran back to the second truck and fled the area.
Approximately 7:30 a.m. Saturday, a resident near Flanders Road and Devere Drive reported his grey 2024 Tundra had been stolen from the driveway sometime overnight. It was described as having a grey fiberglass cap on the back.
Since September 1, nine Toyota Tundras have been stolen in Guelph and attempts have been made to steal at least eight more.

The Guelph Police Service encourages residents to take steps to protect themselves from auto theft. This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Please report suspicious activity around unattended vehicles, especially during overnight hours.
Expired plate leads to impaired
An expired licence plate permit led to an impaired driving charge for a Guelph man Saturday night.
Just after 11 a.m. a vehicle was pulled over on Grange Street because the permit was expired. While speaking to the driver an odour of alcohol was detected on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test the driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 47-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court February 18.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please dont drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
