Man arrested in vehicle damage spree
A Guelph man faces dozens of charges after 26 vehicles had their windows smashed downtown early Tuesday.
Approximately 3:30 a.m. police began receiving reports of vehicles with damaged side windows. All damaged vehicles were parked in the areas of Cork Street and Yarmouth Street. It is believed the suspect was looking for items to steal, however no thefts were reported from any of the vehicles.
The total damage is estimated at more than $13,000.
It was believed the suspect sustained an injury to his hand or forearm, as blood was found at the scene including inside some of the damaged vehicles. He was captured on surveillance video at one of the scenes.
On Wednesday afternoon the male was located downtown and arrested. He was found to have sustained injuries consistent with the evidence at the scenes.
A 33-year-old Guelph man is charged with 26 counts each of mischief under $5,000 and attempted theft under $5,000, two counts of failing to comply with a bail order and one count of breaching a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.
If anyone had their vehicle damaged in the downtown area during the early morning hours of Tuesday and has not reported it to police, please call Constable Michael Braga at 519-824-1212, ext. 7144, or email mbraga@guelphpolice.ca.
Gun threat leads to robbery charge
A Guelph man is charged with robbery after a store clerk was threatened for refusing to sell beer after-hours.
Just after 2 a.m. Thursday, a man arrived in an Uber to a business on Speedvale Avenue East. He attempted to buy three cans of beer but was told by the clerk he could not sell them due to the time. The man left the store, but came back in a short time later and asked if the clerk would sell him beer if he had a gun pointed at him.
During the conversation the man had his hands in his pockets and was fidgeting, causing the clerk to fear he had a weapon. When the clerk picked up the phone to call police the man grabbed six more beers and left the store.
He was located a short time later and placed under arrest.
A 25-year-old Guelph man is charged with robbery and disobeying a court order. He will appear in court May 23.

COBOURG (April 23, 2026) – Cobourg Police Service is reminding the public to be aware of fraud involving gift cards and impersonation on social media platforms, following a recent incident in which a resident was targeted through an online group. In the most recent scam, a 71-year-old woman reported being contacted on social media by an individual claiming to be associated with a television show after she commented on a fan page for the program. The scammer offered a “VIP membership” in exchange for payment through gift card codes. The victim was defrauded out of $1,200. The victim was later contacted again and advised she could attend the TV set if she deposited the cheque, they sent into her bank account and forwarded the funds. When she attended her financial institution, bank staff recognized the signs of a scam and intervened. The victim had no verifiable contact information for the individual, and all communication occurred exclusively through social media. Cobourg Police Service is reminding residents that legitimate organizations and businesses will never request payment in gift cards, nor will they ask individuals to deposit cheques on their behalf. Be cautious of unsolicited messages on social media, even if they appear to come from well-known individuals, celebrities, or organizations Scammers commonly use gift cards or cryptocurrency because they are difficult to trace and cannot be recovered Never send money, gift card codes, or cryptocurrency to someone you have only interacted with online Do not deposit cheques or forward funds at the request of someone else If an offer sounds too good to be true, it likely is Talk to a trusted family member, friend, or financial institution before sending money Fraudsters rely on pressure and secrecy. Police encourage residents to slow down, ask questions, and report suspicious activity. Anyone who believes they may be the target of a scam, or who has received suspicious online communications, is encouraged to contact Cobourg Police Service or report the incident to the Canadian Anti‑Fraud Centre at 1‑888‑495‑8501 or online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
